New features and additions
These are the new features and additions in Internet Services:
Starting and configuring
• option to run Internet Services as a Windows NT service, Starting Internet Services
• InetSvcs.cf file can now be kept in the FCServer folder (with executable) instead of the Config folder on the hard disk
• ability to enable all logging and debugging from the Internet Services Monitor form instead of the Internet Services console (Windows, Mac OS X)
In Windows, you can enable logging and debugging from the Internet Services console. FirstClass does not support a console when running as a Unix daemon.
• task list now reports connection IP addresses, ports, and connection times
Internet Services resources folder
• Create a new cluster form located in this folder
• legacy cluster scripts also located in this folder for pre 8.0 sites
• Create a new Site form located in this folder
WWW folder
• new Template Sets container in the Internet Services folder, which contains the .templates, .webmailtemplates, .mobiletemplates, and LiveLink template sets, see
• new Create a new Site form, to automatically create a FirstClass web site
• new Main Site container containing the default FirstClass web site.
• .sitepref form (formally the Global Site Preferences form) resides in the Main Site container and is automatically created inside each new web site container that you create (see Understanding the default site setup
Extending Internet Services
• Internet Services API (ISAPI) support with a new AddHandler document in the Internet Services folder, see Using Internet Services APIs (ISAPIs)
• support for a Common Internet File System module (CIFS/SMB) that allows you to mount your FirstClass Desktop as a remote drive and access containers and uploaded files from a network directory (for example, Explorer).
Internet Services Security
• added ability to add multiple blocking lists to extend your ability to manage undesirable content, see Defining your own blocking lists
• added support for an anti-spam strike list, using the STRIKE command, that gives suspect IP addresses several attempts to deliver mail before being blacklisted, see Handling spam
• added support for a temporary IP address blocklist, using the BLACKLIST command, that prevents suspect IP addresses from delivering mail, see Handling spam
• added support for a blackhole function that holds spammer IP addresses in a perpetual state of limbo to reduce their ability to affect your site, see Handling spam
• added support to monitor suspected system abuse or Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks, see Using the Internet Services Monitor
• added support for secure email encryption S/MIME (Secure Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions), see Sending secure mail
• added antivirus checking of inbound and outbound message attachments, using the Symtantic AntiVirus feature, see Controlling system viruses and the AntiVirus tab on the Advanced Mail form
• added SSL support for the LDAP protocol, see About security certificates and the LDAP tab on the Advanced Directory form
• added SSL support for the POP3 protocol, see About security certificates and the POP3 tab on the Advanced Mail form
• added SSL support for the IMAP4 protocol, see About security certificates and the IMAP4 tab on the Advanced Mail form.
• added support for two new wildcard formats in filter documents located in the Filters folder
Miscellaneous
• added SET options in the HeaderMatch file, see About browser steering
• changed mimetypes file name to MIME Types and file can now be stored in either the Internet Services folder on the administrator's Desktop or in the Config folder on the hard drive, see The Mime Types file in the Internet Services Administrator's Guide in online help
• the FirstClass server now stores images, pictures, icons, forms, and help files for the client and Internet Services in the FirstClass Resource Registry, see Understanding Internet Services resources
New in forms
These are the changes in the Internet Services forms:
Basic Internet Setup form
• moved the Internet Connection setup from the Connection tab to the General tab
• moved the Connection tab from the second tab to the eighth tab, renamed it Connections tab, and added blackholing and connection rejection options
• added Relaying, RBL, Junk, Mail Rules, and Abuse subtabs to the UCE/Spam tab
• removed the ability to allow relaying for SMTP AUTH users with specific privileges enabled from the Relaying subtab
• added Strike List option on the Junk subtab
• FTP tab renamed File to accommodate new CIFS/SMB option
• added spam scoring, NDN, and mail crosspost limit options to the Mail Rules subtab.
Advanced Mail form
• added the ability to create security certificates for theSMTP tab
• added Symantec AntiVirus capabilities on the Antivirus tab
• added Plain and HTML Text to the message body handling under the Outbound tab.
Advanced Web & File form
• added Common Internet File Sharing (CIFS) tab
• added Access and Logging subtabs on the HTTP tab
• added administrator access option in the Access subtab
• added log statistics options to the Logging subtab.
Internet Services Monitor form
• added a Security tab and Logging Levels tab
• added CIFS to the Protocols tab
• added Server Priority and Write log to disk buttons to the Control tab
• separated Flush cache button to the HTTP, IP blacklist, blackholed connections, and DNS cache lists.
.sitepref form
• added Site name and Include footer fields on the Display tab
• added Livelink and Mobile to the primary web interface pulldown menu in theDisplay tab
• added menu width options to theDisplay tab
• added a Themes field on the Appearance tab
• added Livelink options (navigation button and highlighted tab) to theColors subtab
• added new font fields to the Fonts subtab.
