Creating a clustered service by protocol
To make your system run more efficiently, you can cluster Internet Services by protocol. Think of dedicating one Internet Services cluster to one protocol as similar to having a dedicated Internet phone line in your house. Your Internet phone line is only used for logging on to the Internet, whereas your regular phone line is used for all other incoming and outgoing calls.
In this scenario, we decided to cluster all SMTP traffic on Husky Planes. This way, all other services (for example, HTTP, FTP, and so on) can run more efficiently on our primary Internet Services machine.
These are the system forms we used to create this clustered setup:
Primary Internet Services
• Basic Internet Setup form
• Gateway form
Clustered Mail Services
• Basic Internet Setup form
• Gateway form
Creating the Mail Services cluster
The first thing we did was create a new mail clustered service by following these steps:
1 Create a new clustered service, following the steps in Creating a clustered service.
In this example, we named the new clustered service Mail Services.
2 Open the Mail Services folder in the Clustered Services folder on the administrator’s Desktop.
3 Double-click the Basic Internet Setup form.
4 Enter your primary server name (for example, huskyplanes.com) in "Primary domain name" and fill in "Primary DNS" and the "Postmaster name" on the General tab.
5 Select "Enable SMTP" on the Mail tab.
6 Enter your mail server name (for example, mail.huskyplanes.com) in "SMTP server domain name".
7 Enter Mail Services in "Service account" on the Service tab.
8 Clear all other protocols on the Basic Internet Setup form.
9 Open the Mail Services gateway form in the Gateways & Services folder on the administrator's Desktop and confirm the gateway name and serial number.
The entry in "Gateway name" should match the entry in "Service account" on the Service tab on the Basic Internet Services form. The server serial number should be the same as you entered in the original FirstClass script when you created the Mail Services cluster.
Disabling SMTP traffic on the primary Internet Services
The next thing we did was disable all SMTP traffic on our primary Internet Services by following these steps:
1 Open the Basic Internet Setup form in the primary Internet Services folder.
2 Verify that the correct information has been entered on the General tab.
3 Clear "Enable SMTP" on the Mail tab.
4 Configure the rest of the form as required.
Now all SMTP traffic for Husky Planes employees is routed through the Mail Services cluster and all other protocols are routed through the primary Internet Services.
Dedicating one or more user groups to a clustered service
You can separate your system load even more by binding one or more user groups to a clustered service. For example, you could have all SMTP traffic for certain user groups route through one clustered service and the traffic for the rest of your employees route through your primary Internet Services.
In this scenario, we decided to route SMTP traffic for the Management, Sales, and Marketing groups through a separate mail clustered service and have all other employee traffic (including SMTP traffic) continue to route through the primary Internet Services.
These are the system forms we used to create this clustered setup:
Primary Internet Services
• Basic Internet Setup form
• Gateway form
• User Group form
Clustered Mail Services
• Basic Internet Setup form
• Gateway form
Enabling SMTP on the primary Internet Services
This is how we configured the primary Internet Services (for all other employee traffic):
If SMTP is enabled on two or more clusters for different groups, you must define these groups on each cluster’s gateway form.
1 Open the primary Internet Services folder on the administrator's Desktop.
2 Double-click the Basic Internet Setup form.
3 Select Enable SMTP on the Mail tab.
4 Enter your mail server name (for example, mail.huskyplanes.com) in "SMTP server domain name".
Configuring the gateways
This is how we configured the Mail Services cluster (for the dedicated user group web traffic):
1 Open the Gateways & Services folder on the administrator's Desktop.
2 Open the Mail Services gateway form.
3 Enter Mail Services in "Service name" on the Main tab.
4 Click the Directory tab and enter the user groups to which you want to limit this service (in the example, the user groups are: Management, Sales, Marketing) in "Allow these groups to use this service".
5 Click the Directory information button, and enter the same password as the primary Internet Services in "Password".
6 Open the primary Internet Services gateway form.
7 Click the Directory tab and enter the other groups (excluding the original groups you entered in Step 4) in "Allow these groups to use this service".
8 Open each user group form, click the Directory tab, and enter Other Sites in "Allow this group to view these groups".
This enables each user group to see other gateways.
If the user group is already configured to see all other sites, you do not have to configure the Directory tab.
Now, all SMTP traffic for the Management, Sales, and Marketing groups routes through a separate mail clustered service and all other employee SMTP traffic routes through the primary Internet Services.
