Want to liven up your essay? Add a table of contents using FirstClass links. When you create your essay in a FirstClass document, you can put links at the beginning so readers can jump to the different sections of the document. You can also place links throughout your essay to direct readers to other resources.
9203_31709_1.png How to create links
A link is an object that you click or double-click to open another FirstClass object or a web page. A marker is a placeholder within a document or message. These icons are invisible to readers.
This is the symbol you will see when a link is created.

To link to a location within a document or message, you need to create a marker at the desired location, and then link to that marker.

Stacey Jones is a student at Avalon Academy. Her teacher instructs her work group to write an essay about Alligators. This is the essay created by Stacey's group:

Stacey decides that it would be a good idea to link the words in the contents list at the top of the page to the various sections of the essay. To create each link, she does the following:
1 She assigns a marker to each title so they have something to link to.
She follows these steps to create a marker:
a She positions the cursor where she wants the marker and chooses Edit > Insert > Insert Marker.
b She assigns a name to the marker.

If the text to the right of the proposed marker is appropriate as a marker name, she could simply select that text and choose Edit > Make Marker.

Marker text is case sensitive.
2       She enters the link text in the desired location.
For this assignment, Stacey enters the text at the top of the page as a list of contents.
