Looking for a simple way to speak one-on-one with parents on a regular basis? Use the instant messaging feature of FirstClass to discuss a student's progress with their parent(s) online. Instant messaging saves you and the parent the inconvenience of having to travel to school to meet, as you can both participate in the meeting from home or the office. This also means meetings never have to be cancelled because of weather. Further, you can set up your instant messaging session to automatically save a transcript and send it to your Mailbox.

John Smith teaches Grade 12 English at Avalon Academy. He arranges an instant messaging session with each set of parents at least once a term. His parent environment contains a calendar where he books all of the meetings.  
BEFORE THE MEETING
Here are the steps he follows to organize the parent meetings:
1   He schedules private meetings with each parent by creating new events for each set of parents in the Parents calendar.

2   He sends a global email to parents asking them to confirm their online meeting time. The email also provides meeting instructions.

MEETING TIME
John schedules several parent meetings in succession. He starts each instant messaging session by selecting Private Chat from the Collaborate menu and inviting the respective parent.

SAVE TRANSCRIPT
John sets up the instant messaging session to automatically send the transcript to his Mailbox when the session has completed. To do this, he checks the Save transcript box on the Setup tab.
